is classified as a strong two factor authentication
system that combines the following features to prove the identity of an individual:
Password access tokens that are assigned to individuals.
One time passwords that can be changed periodically.
Password or Personal Identification Number (PIN).
Real-Time Authentication (periodically checking presence of token and id).
Secure storage and retrieval of credentials like private key and certificate.
Together, these features combine something an individual has (the token
), something they know (the pin
and user id), as well as the digital identity in the form of a digital certificate
and private key
provided by a Trusted Authority in order to prevent someone else from assuming their identity.
The PKI USB token
can be accessed with a one time password (OTP's)
and stores digital certificates
(for PKI-based authentication, encryption, digital signing, and non-repudiation), and smart card information.
