UK IT supplier faces £6 Million fine after ransomware attack
The UK IT supplier Advanced may face a £6 million fine from the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) for a ransomware attack in August 2022. This attack severely disrupted British healthcare services, impacting emergency response and patient care.
The ransomware attack forced critical healthcare systems, including the NHS 111 emergency number, to revert to manual operations. This not only hindered the dispatch of ambulances and management of medical records but also compromised sensitive personal data of 83,000 individuals, including medical records and home access details for 900 homecare patients.
The ICO highlights the need for robust information security measures. Companies like Advanced are legally obligated to implement adequate technical and organizational safeguards to protect personal data.
The breach underscores the stress and disruption caused when healthcare services and personal information are compromised.
