The danger begins with the developer in the AI Supply Chain
AI is transforming software supply chain risks: attacks are now primarily targeting developer workflows and open-source repositories, while threats surrounding model weights, vector stores, and MCP servers remain largely experimental.
Attackers are even exploiting package names hallucinated by generative AI by registering them as malicious packages, which AI agents may then install automatically.
According to Zentera, network and environment segmentation provides more risk reduction per euro than additional AI security tools alone, as it limits the impact of unknown attacks.
Self-hosted AI is also no guarantee of security: without sandboxing and strict boundaries, agents can still introduce malware, leak credentials, or perform unintended actions.
With agentic AI, security is therefore shifting from just identity & privileges to containment, segmentation, and access tailored to task and intent.
