Insider Job Exposed: Tesla Data Breach Hits 75,000 Employees
Tesla, owned by Elon Musk, confirms that a data breach impacting over 75,000 employees was the result of insider misconduct. The electric car maker states that the breach was initiated by two former employees who leaked personal information of more than 75,000 individuals to a foreign media outlet.
The breach encompassed personally identifiable details such as names, addresses, phone numbers, employment records, and Social Security numbers of both current and former employees.
The investigation revealed that the two former employees violated Tesla’s IT security and data protection policies by sharing the information with German newspaper Handelsblatt. Handelsblatt assured Tesla that it would refrain from publishing or using the leaked information inappropriately, as it is legally prohibited from doing so. In May, Handelsblatt reported a substantial breach involving the exposure of internal documents, named “Tesla Files,” containing confidential data like personal information, customer bank details, production secrets, and complaints about Tesla’s Full Self-Driving features. Tesla filed lawsuits against the responsible former employees, leading to the confiscation of their electronic devices. Court orders prevent further use, access, or dissemination of the data under criminal penalties. This breach comes after a previous incident in which Tesla workers reportedly shared sensitive images recorded by customer cars, including invasive images and videos recorded by car cameras. The leak also included sensitive information like Elon Musk’s Social Security number. Tesla’s response involves legal action, electronic device seizures, and court orders to prevent further data misuse. This incident underscores the challenges of insider threats in data security.
